Almost everyone has heard of the variety of national parks that are available throughout the United States and that draw millions of visitors each year. Sometimes, however, there are not as many visitors to the state parks that are found throughout the United States and can be just as impressive, if not more so.
There are over 10,000 state parks throughout the entirety of the country, so it can be difficult to narrow down which are some of the best. Below, however, you will find five state parks that you have to see for yourself that offer some of the most stunning views.
1. Blackwater Falls State Park
Blackwater Falls State Park is found in the state of West Virginia, and it is definitely one of the most beautiful in the country for nature enthusiasts. You will see the Blackwater River at this state park which has beautiful, amber-colored water due to the tannic acid in the hemlock trees throughout.
There is over an eight-mile gorge that runs through the park, and waterfalls coming from the river which is over five stories high. The falls are some of the most beautiful places to see in the world, and there is even Blackwater Falls State Park camping so you can stay right on the banks of the river.
2. Ecola State Park
Ecola State Park is found in the northern portion of Oregon on the west coast. It encompasses nine miles of the coastline of the Pacific Ocean along the Tillamook Head cliffs, which are instantly recognizable due to popular culture. During the summer, you may even catch a glimpse of a whale that comes into the area to feed. Be sure to hike eight miles of the Oregon Coast Trail, visit Indian Beach, and experience the stunning views of the cliffs, the ocean, and even the spruce-filled forest.
3. Baxter State Park
Baxter State Park is directly opposite Ecola State Park and is found within the beauty of Maine. The park covers over 200,000 acres, and you will find many lakes, portions of the Appalachian Trail, and even views of Mount Katahdin throughout. The most popular lake found on the property is Wassataquoik Lake and it is over 178 acres large and allows for paddling adventures and camping on the banks. You can even borrow a canoe for the day and stay in one of the lean-tos along the lake so you have nothing to worry about after your 10-mile hike.
4. Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point State Park is in Utah around the area of Moab. The scenery is almost unreal to some individuals as you will find arches made from sandstone, orange canyons throughout, and even views of the Colorado River from 2,000 feet above. To see the actual Horseshoe Bend of the river, take a hike on the West Rim Trail.
There are yurts you can stay in on the two campsites if you do not have your own tent and 17 miles of mountain biking trails to experience.
5. Grayson Highlands State Park
Grayson Highlands State Park is found within the high country of western Virginia, and it is quite large at 4,500 acres. There are wild ponies throughout this high country, but that is not all there is at this beautiful park. Find boulders at Highlands Bouldering Area, mountain peaks that are over a mile high, and parts of the Appalachian Trail that you can hike on to say that you have been on it. You can rent a crash pad or a yurt for the ultimate camping experience at this state park.
Final Thoughts
State parks often do not get the same amount of attention as national parks do in the United States, but they should. Sometimes the scenery is just as beautiful, and who knows, you may even encounter a wild pony at one or two of them in the country. No matter the type of adventure you are looking for, each of the parks listed above is sure to please the outdoor enthusiast inside of you. Plus, each offers wonderful camping experiences right inside the acreage that is near some of the best views that each park offers to you.
